Emotional Balance
3 Easy Aromatherapy Tips for Uncertain Times
By Caryn Gehlmann
Uncertainty… that seems to be the word of the moment as we continue to muddle through the pandemic. Some things are getting better and some things are getting worse. The one thing we can be certain about though seems to be uncertainty. And this impacts all areas of life — health, family, work, school, hobbies, recreation — making it difficult to plan anything! So that’s why I wanted to share with you some aromatherapy tips. For uncertain times ahead, we need all the help we can get!
In this “Just for the Smell of It” post, I’m sharing a few simple strategies to help you face uncertainty with a little more confidence and a little less worry.
Aromatherapy Tip #1 — Daily Self-Care Makes Uncertainty Easier
Maybe in the past self-care wasn’t too high up on your list. You were busy taking care of work, family, and other responsibilities and felt you just didn’t have the time to “pamper” yourself. That was then, but what about now? Hopefully, you’ve realized that self-care is a must to give us the resilience we need.
I really appreciated this article, 69 Top Self-Care Tips for Taking Care of You During the Coronavirus Pandemic. It talked about how now more than ever, practicing self-care is essential to taking care of our emotional well-being. Christine Carter, Ph.D., a sociologist and senior fellow at the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California in Berkeley was quoted as saying, “Self-care is not selfish. This is a time of incredible anxiety and stress. Focusing on what makes us feel nourished, on what gives us meaning, is part of easing those feelings and giving us a more solid foundation.” Interesting to see that aromatherapy, meditation, deep breathing exercises were all on the list of things you can do for self-care.
To make it easier to actually do something for yourself, instead of just putting it on your long list of to-dos, pick one thing and start making it part of your daily routine. Here are a few ideas that only take a few minutes to do but can help you feel less worried and more confident about your day:
Diffusing an uplifting scent
Aromatherapy bath
Aromatherapy shower
Footbath
Hand massage
Deep breathing break

Aromatherapy Tip #2 — Protect your Body AND Spirit in Uncertain Social Settings
I’ve talked to some who get very anxious whenever they have to leave the house or go to high-traffic, public spaces. But the reality is most of us can’t stay home forever and it’s not good for us to live in a state of constant fear and worry. Preparation can go a long way to helping us feel more confident and in control of the situation.
We’ve discovered over the last year that e3’s Face Mask Spritzers are a fantastic thing to keep in your pocket, purse, or backpack so you’re always prepared. I originally designed this product after speaking with healthcare workers who were fatigued by wearing masks at hospitals all day long. A spritz from our spritzers gave those who wear a face mask easy access to refreshing aromatherapy throughout the day. However, we’ve since learned from our customers that these pocket-sized aromatherapy sanitizers are useful and convenient in many other ways, too!
In addition to using them to make breathing through a mask more pleasant, you can use these aromatherapy spritzers as a super-portable hand sanitizer. You can even clean surfaces when you’re on the go. These spritzers can be used when you want to quickly sanitize the surface — like the grocery cart at the store, your steering wheel in your car, door handles in your hotel room, etc. You can even use it to freshen up the air in your office, car, or hotel room.
Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference!
Aromatherapy Tip #3 — Support Kids Through Scholastic Uncertainty
Kids are coping with extra stress right now as well. Their last year of school was disjointed and even if they’re back in the classroom this year, they can be dealing with extra stress and worry. I had a question from a local teacher that I wanted to share with you if you have kids going back to school.
“Any recommendations for what we can diffuse in classrooms to support the situation with Covid? Kids are getting Delta variant pretty easily, so we would be interested in ideas.”
I recommended that she diffuse e3’s Resilience blend in her classroom. This is the blend I created last year when the pandemic began and the essential oils I chose are all high anti-viral essential oils. And for a bit of an emotional uplift for the kids, I recommended she add a drop of Orange, Sweet to the diffuser too.
