Essential Oils for Bathroom Smells + DIY Poop Spray
By Caryn Gehlmann
Do you share a bathroom? Most of us do, either at home or at work. And during the holiday season, you might be sharing the bathroom with lots of extended family and friends. It can be a challenge to keep your bathroom smelling good with all that use! Have you ever thought of using essential oils for bathroom smells? Have you ever made a DIY poop spray?
Essential oils provide an easy, inexpensive, earth-friendly way to keep your bathroom smelling sweet all day long! Here are a few DIY hacks for you whether you’re a pro with essential oils or brand new to them.
You’ve most likely seen a bottle of Poo-Pourri in the bathroom, which is designed to be sprayed pre-poop. The compounds in the formula form a protective film on the surface of the toilet bowl water, trapping odors below — helping prevent sticking to the toilet and lingering into the air. A recent article from Well + Good caught my eye since the founder of Poo-Pourri says she originally formulated Poo-Pourri in her own home. It’s not that hard, and the benefit of making it yourself, besides saving money, is you get to choose the scent!

You can feel good about using all-natural essential oils in your home. It’s good for your family and good for the environment! Try these suggestions and let us know what you think!
Purify Pre-poop Spray Recipe
½ c. Water
30 drops of e3’s Purify blend*
1 teaspoon rubbing alcohol
1 teaspoon Dish soap (or you can use without it)
Just place the ingredients in a 4-ounce spray bottle and shake it before spraying your toilet, pre-poop.
*e3’s Purify blend is a great option because it smells fresh and clean and uses essential oils with anti-infectious properties that clean the air. However, other options would be e3’s Breathe Easy, Lemon, Eucalyptus, Geranium, or any other essential oil that packs a bit of aromatic punch!
Uhoh… what if the damage has already been done and you have a stinky bathroom and guests or clients on the way? You may avoid most air fresheners because you know that synthetic fragrances trigger allergic and asthmatic responses for many, and studies are showing just how hazardous indoor air pollution can be. There’s an easy alternative, make your own air freshener.
Psst… not only can you use this in the bathroom, but it also works in the kitchen, at work, or when you travel and have a less-than-pleasant smell in your hotel room. You can even spritz your car to get rid of the scent of stale food or residual B.O. from your gym bag in the trunk!
Bathroom Air Freshener
4 ounces of water
30-60 drops of Antiseptic blend*
Add ingredients to a spritzer bottle. Shake well before each use and avoid getting the mist into the eyes. Or buy our pre-made Antiseptic Spritzer.
*e3’s Antiseptic blend is a great option because it has a strong, clean smell and uses essential oils with anti-infectious properties that clean the air. However, other options would be e3’s Breathe Easy, Serenity, Lemon, Eucalyptus, Geranium, or any other essential oil that smells good!
What about cleaning your toilet? Have you ever tried a toilet bomb, here’s a recipe that will not only help your toilet smell good, it will be shiny clean too!
e3 Sweet Smelling Toilet Bomb
½ cup baking soda
¼ cup citric acid
10 drops Lemon essential oil*
5 drops of Lavender essential oil*
5 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil*
Water (12 spritzes from spray bottle)
Add the first five ingredients together in a bowl and then spritz with water and mix thoroughly. Pack into a silicone ice cube tray and let dry overnight (or use a scooper like a melon ball roller and dry on wax paper). After drying, pop out of the mold and store in a glass container. To clean drop one into the toilet bowl. Once it’s done fizzing, scrub with a toilet brush.
* Instead of using individual oils, you can use 20 drops of e3 Antiseptic Blend.
