Belly Issues? Try 3 DIY Aromatherapy Remedies to Soothe Your Stomach Naturally
Caryn Gehlmann, Clinical Aromatherapist
We’ve all experienced belly issues — uncomfortable belly bloat after a rich meal, a wave of nausea during stressful moments, or a tight, queasy stomach that refuses to settle. And while it’s tempting to reach for quick fixes, your body often responds better to gentle, natural care.
That’s where aromatherapy shines.
Aromatherapy isn’t just about pleasing your nose. It’s outstanding for creating plant-powered, sensory rituals to calm your nervous system, ease tension, and support your body’s natural processes. And the best part? You don’t have to ingest essential oils to experience their benefits. Applying essential oils safely to the skin (properly diluted!) or breathing them in through diffusion or personal inhalers is a wonderfully effective way to soothe belly issues.
Important Safety Notes: Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts and should never be ingested unless under the direct care of a qualified clinical aromatherapist. For topical use, always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil like fractionated coconut, jojoba, or sweet almond oil, and perform a patch test to check for sensitivity. Consult your health care professional before using essential oils during pregnancy, labor, and lactation, and don’t use on children under 3 years of age.
3 Simple, Feel-good Recipes for Belly Issues
Bloating & Gas Relief — Essential Oils + Massage
Fennel is a classic digestive ally known for easing bloating and gas. Lemongrass is naturally carminative (helps settle the stomach) and uplifting, while Cypress supports lymphatic flow and soothes abdominal tightness.
- 3 drops Fennel
- 2 drops Lemongrass
- 2 drops Cypress
- 1 tablespoon fractionated coconut or jojoba oil
Blend the essential oils into the carrier oil. Gently massage over your abdomen in slow, clockwise circles after meals or whenever bloating strikes. This helps with digestion and turns discomfort into a mindful self-care moment. If you’re looking for a done-for-you blend for your belly issues, try e3’s Digestion.
Options: The sweetness of Fennel offsets the sharp Lemongrass, while Cypress grounds the blend. The scent profile is fresh, herbal, slightly sweet, and woody. If you wanted a bit more depth, a drop of Copaiba Balsam (soft, resinous base note) could round it out, but it’s balanced.
Nausea Relief — Essential Oils + Soothing Atmosphere
Mandarin Red is calming, bright, and helps ease digestive upset. Juniperberry gently supports detoxification, while Copaiba Balsam soothing, anti-inflammatory properties help calm both body and mind.
- 4 drops Mandarin Red
- 2 drops Juniperberry
- 2 drops Copaiba Balsam
Add the blend to your diffuser when feeling queasy or after a heavy meal to create a grounding, stomach-soothing atmosphere. (I wouldn’t recommend diffusing essential oils during meal time as the food aromas wouldn’t mix well with the essential oils.) No diffuser? Place a few drops on a tissue or cotton ball and inhale gently for on-the-go relief.
Options: The citrusy brightness of Mandarin Red lifts the senses, Juniperberry adds a grounding freshness, and Copaiba Balsam anchors it with warmth. However, e3’s Digestion Blend would be a good alternative for your diffuser or inhaler.
Tension Tummy Comfort — Essential Oils + Bath Soak
When emotional stress hits your stomach, this bath blend is your go-to. Lemongrass uplifts mood and eases digestive sluggishness, Copaiba Balsam helps calm inflammation and tension, and Cypress supports circulation to help release tightness.
- 4 drops Lemongrass
- 3 drops Copaiba Balsam
- 2 drops Cypress
- 1 cup Epsom salt
- 1 tablespoon carrier oil (like jojoba oil or castor oil)
Blend essential oils with the carrier oil, then mix into the Epsom salt. (Never add oils straight to bath water.) Add to a warm bath, soak for at least 20 minutes, and practice slow, deep breathing while you unwind. It’s a whole-body reset!
Options: This is a fresh and soothing aroma, with enough depth from Copaiba Balsam to mellow the brightness of Lemongrass. You could add 1 drop of Mandarin Red or Fennel if you want a little sweetness to soften it.
When you create powerful, intentional rituals for your belly issues, you’re inviting your body to relax, rebalance, and reset naturally.
