Essential Oils for Joy: Bring Lightness & Vitality to Your Day
By Caryn Gehlmann, Clinical Aromatherapist

Doesn’t this little guy just make you smile?
Have you ever caught the scent of something that instantly transported you to another time or place? Maybe it’s fresh-cut lavender, warm herbs fresh from the garden, or the tang of oranges being peeled. Before you even realize it, you’re smiling and taking a deeper breath, maybe even remembering something you haven’t thought about in years. I love how pleasant aromas can trigger happy emotions like that. So when someone asked me how to pick essential oils for joy, I was thrilled.
Keep in mind that your emotional response to aroma is very personal. And while essential oils can’t change what’s happening around us, they can change how we experience a moment. They give us a gentle reminder to pause, take a deep breath, and notice what’s right in front of us.
That being said, over the years, I’ve discovered a handful of essential oils that I instinctively reach for when I want to bring a little more lightness into my day. And after helping customers explore aromatherapy for more than two decades, I’ve found that many of you are drawn to these same uplifting aromas, too.
How Certain Aromas Evoke Emotions Like Joy
Our sense of smell has a direct pathway to the limbic system, the area of the brain involved in emotion, memory, and behavior. Every time you inhale an aroma, receptors in your nose send signals that can trigger memories, influence emotions, and shape how you experience the present moment. That’s why one scent may remind you of your grandmother’s garden while another brings back memories of a favorite vacation or a peaceful afternoon outdoors.
Because every person’s scent memories are unique, the essential oils that bring me joy may not be the exact same ones that speak to you. Part of the fun of aromatherapy is discovering which aromas make you naturally pause, breathe deeply, and think, “Ah…that’s the one.”
My Favorite Essential Oils for Joy
If someone asks me where to start, my answer is almost always Lavender, and Bergamot would be my second favorite.
Every summer, I spend time in the lavender fields here in Southern Oregon, and it’s one of my favorite places to slow down. As the breeze carries the fragrance through the rows of blooming lavender, something wonderful happens. People naturally relax. Smiles and laughter are everywhere. Laughter comes more freely.
I’ve watched this happen year after year.
I see it again during my annual lavender distillation class. As everyone gathers around the still, learning how essential oil and hydrosol are created, the room fills with conversation, curiosity, and laughter. Long after the class is over, people tell me how much they enjoyed the experience. For example, in response to a recent email I sent out about this class, one customer recently wrote: “It’s a great class. I took it from you years ago, and it was wonderful.”
Moments like these remind me that aroma isn’t just something we smell. It becomes part of the memories we carry with us.
Which Lavender Essential Oil Will Spark Joy In You?
One thing many people don’t realize is that lavender isn’t just one aroma. Each variety has its own personality and creates a slightly different experience. So at e3, we carry four types of lavender essential oil.
Lavender France: This classic floral aroma promotes calm; it has a higher ester content due to being grown at high altitudes.
Lavender EE: It has a richer, more earthy, warm aroma; it’s a great choice for skin care.
Lavender Spike: Used for clarity and calm, this invigorating oil has a brighter, herbaceous aroma.
Lavandin: Its camphor herbal notes helps open sinus and nose congestion; it also takes the edge off of crankiness.
There isn’t a “best” lavender, only the one that smells best to you.
Three Joyful Blends to Try
One of the greatest pleasures of aromatherapy is creating blends that match the feeling you want to invite into your day.
Lavender Breeze
3 drops Lavender France
2 drops Ho Wood
1 drop Neroli Dilute
Diffuse this blend while reading, enjoying a quiet evening, or simply taking a few moments to yourself. The aroma is soft, floral, and gently grounding.
Summer Lavender Fields
3 drops Lavender EE
2 drops Lavandin
2 drops Neroli
1 drop Ho Wood
This blend reminds me of warm sunshine, blue skies, and rows of lavender swaying in a gentle breeze. It’s one of my favorite ways to bring a little summer indoors.
Bright Morning Clarity
3 drops Spanish Sage
2 drops Lavender Spike
2 drops Lavandin
Fresh, herbal, and lightly floral, this blend creates a clean, refreshing atmosphere that’s perfect for your office, creative projects, or the start of a new day.
Feel free to adjust these recipes to suit your preferred essential oils for joy. How do you know which oils to use? You’ll know when you feel the Ahhhh response I mentioned earlier. So pay attention to the aromas that make you stop for just a moment. The ones that invite you to take a slow, deep breath. That’s where your best blends begin.
(You can read about my process for choosing essential oils in my article: How Do You Blend Essential Oils So They Smell Good and Benefit You?)
