Essential Oils for Mind & Body Wellness
By Caryn Gehlmann
I’m so pleased to introduce you to Caitlin Rose Fears, a licensed massage therapist, who has for many years been incorporating essential oils for mind and body wellness. As I’ve been training for my upcoming half-triathlon, my body needed extra support and Caitlin knew just what to do to help me.
Caitlin worked at orthopedic and oncology facilities and the pain she witnessed there inspired her to explore whether there might be an approach beyond traditional medication that addressed the body and mind as a unified system. The result was her decision to pursue a career in massage therapy and to align this with her perspective on mind-body integration. She’s included aromatherapy in her practice, so you’ll look forward to hearing how essential oils can help the whole body.
Tell us about your background and expertise.
My passion to help people improve their well-being and that is why opening a space like Meridian Wellness is so important. Massage can be a powerful tool in facilitating health both in body and mind. I provide various modalities of massage to meet individual needs such as deep tissue massage, Cupping Therapy, CranioSacral Therapy, Swedish Massage, sports injury, myofascial release, and prenatal. My goal is to help each client be pain-free and find a sense of vitality and well-being through massage. Physical health can improve emotional health so one can experience whole body wellness.
Massage therapy is preventive illness and supports a healthy lifestyle. I am passionate about my career and I am continually learning so I can provide the best treatment possible for my clients. In June 2015 I decided to open Meridian Wellness to provide more than just massage for my clients and community. By bringing together some of the Rogue Valley’s most talented healers one can find high quality care within one facility.
When were you initially introduced to aromatherapy and, in your practice, how do you use essential oils to provide comfort and promote whole body wellness?
I remember being a young girl and always gravitating toward essential oils vs perfumes. Later, in my early twenties, I worked at Hematology and oncology where I met the gorgeous and wise Caryn Gehlmann. She lovingly took me under her wing and taught me about how to use essential oils and gave me samples. I saw how they enhanced her well-being through her own healing journey and I was intrigued to learn more. Naturally, I became awestruck at how powerful essential oils are especially being in a field of work surrounded by synthetic drugs. Eventually I decided to go to massage school and Caryn sponsored me by providing me with e3 lotions and essential oils (what a total saint she is)! I have from that day forward, 11 years later, never stopped using e3 lotion and oils. I sell the essential oils at my wellness center, as well as, infuse them into sessions as I feel called to. Due to allergies and scent sensitivities, I choose not to diffuse in my clinic space. Rather, I enjoy using them from a more tailored treatment perspective.
What treatments have you found helpful working with people who enjoy exercising and want to lead an active lifestyle?
I personally find many pathways to healing for all realms of activity. Whether it be an athlete or someone confined to a wheelchair. I have discovered that therapeutic deep tissue, relaxation massage, somatic emotional release, essential oils, cupping Therapy, and CranioSacral Therapy to all be effective and important. Sometimes one works better than the other depending on client and their specific needs. I enjoy doing what I call a highbred treatment where I use multiple treatments in one session to really work on the superficial levels as well as the underlying root cause issues.
Which essential oils are helpful for the feet and/or fascia of active individuals?
I often love using just a single note for treatment like Peppermint or Black Pepper. Muscle Soothe blend is also a great go-to and is a client favorite.
Is there anything else you’d like to share that would be helpful to readers?
I am a total e3 fan for these reasons…
- Integrity
- Quality
- Education
- Customer service
- Purity
- Best blends
- Customizable
- Price point
- Appropriate marketing
- Healing first
