Pre-Filled Aromatherapy Inhalers for Emergency Comfort Care
By Caryn Gehlmann, Clinical Aromatherapist
Have you ever been having a great day, but then something happened to ruin it? Of course, we all have! There are a lot of things we can do to prepare ourselves to handle life stressors, like learning deep breathing exercises or meditation. Yet, often overlooked is a very simple remedy that all of us here at e3 swear by for cultivating comfort at a moment’s notice. What is it? Stashing pre-filled aromatherapy inhalers everywhere — in our purses, pockets, cars, desks, and homes.
In this month’s Q&A I’m going to be answering questions about how to use and get the most out of aromatherapy inhalers.
The first question I hear is, why does e3 sell empty inhalers, instead of pre-filled aromatherapy inhalers? That’s a really great question, there are three reasons we decided to let you choose which scent you want in your inhaler:
- You get to customize your own aromatherapy experience since the comforting power of scent is unique to each person. (You can learn more about this in our ebook “Listen” to Your Nose.) Customizing is super easy — watch our short video below where Lakita shows you how to do it.
- You can use these inhalers for a very long time, as they are made from reusable glass and metal. Sadly, many pre-filled aromatherapy inhalers are thrown away after the aroma is no longer effective, so our option is a great alternative for those who care about sustainability and the environment.
- You know exactly what you’re getting in your inhaler. Unlike the many pre-filled aromatherapy inhalers that don’t identify the essential oil’s country of origin or the Latin name. At e3, we’re extremely transparent about this information, as well as the high-quality testing we do.
Do you have more questions? Here are answers to frequently asked questions about pre-filled aromatherapy inhalers.

How long do aromatherapy inhalers last?
The duration of an aromatherapy inhaler’s effectiveness depends on factors such as the quality of the essential oils used, how frequently it’s used, and the way it’s stored. Depending on the intensity of the aroma, our pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils last anywhere from 6 to 9 months.
Are there any essential oils that should be avoided in aromatherapy inhalers due to potential toxicity or adverse effects?
Some essential oils, such as Wintergreen, Camphor, and Pennyroyal, can be toxic or cause adverse reactions if inhaled in large quantities. It’s essential to research and use oils safely when using them in aromatherapy inhalers.
Do aromatherapy inhalers interact with prescription medications or other supplements?
While aromatherapy inhalers are generally safe to use, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional if you’re taking prescription medications or other supplements, as certain essential oils may interact with them.
Can aromatherapy inhalers be used by individuals with respiratory conditions?
Individuals with respiratory conditions should use aromatherapy inhalers cautiously and consult with a healthcare professional before use, as some essential oils may trigger asthma or exacerbate respiratory symptoms.
Are there any age restrictions for using aromatherapy inhalers, such as for young children or the elderly?
Aromatherapy inhalers can be used by individuals of various ages, but special precautions should be taken for young children and the elderly. Review our Safety Guidelines here.
If you want to go for it and fill your own aromatherapy inhaler with your favorite essential oil or blend, we suggest you put it on your calendar to check and refresh your pre-filled aromatherapy inhalers every 6 months. That way you’ll always have the comfort you need when you need it. Nothing is more disappointing than opening your year-old inhaler and finding the aroma isn’t as comforting as you expect it to be. Also, think about color-coding the inhaler to the type of oil or blend you’re using, like orange for citrus or blue for mood-lifting peppermint. If your question hasn’t been answered, be sure to reach out and ask for more information.
