Precious Essential Oils Too Costly? Try e3 Dilutes
By Caryn Gehlmann
Why are certain essential oils so expensive? Perhaps there’s a certain oil you want to try, like Jasmine, Neroli, or Chamomile Roman, but when you see the price tag you’re a little shocked. At e3 we offer certain precious essential oils diluted to save you money and protect the environment… more on that later. But you may wonder why are these precious oils so much more expensive than let’s say, Lavender, Peppermint, or Orange?
There are various reasons certain essential oils cost more and are considered precious, such as:
The amount of raw botanical material it takes to produce the final product. Some plants produce less oil when they’re distilled. For example, if you’ve ever grown roses in your garden you know that it takes effort to cultivate these sweet-smelling flowers. And it’s estimated that 6,000 to 8,000 pounds of roses yields 2 pounds of Rose essential oil.
Harvesting challenges. Some botanicals require more manual labor to collect and process. There are also plants that only grow during a short window and need to be harvested at precise times. This is true in the case of Melissa essential oil, which has the additional challenge of needing to be distilled within a 2-hour time frame.
Rare, exotic plants that only grow in certain areas. Certain botanicals grow best in their native environment, or habitat that is similar, so getting essential oils from these areas requires you to pay more to cover storage and shipping. For example, Blue Tansy is a rare plant that originates from the coast of Morocco. Thousands of its little flowers need to be harvested to bring you this beautiful blue oil.
So does this mean you should shop around and find the cheapest versions of these precious essential oils online? Be cautious with that approach. Often, suppliers will call something “Helichrysum” or “Neroli” but it’s either a different plant species or has synthetic fillers. Look for the Latin name to confirm it’s the plant you’re really looking for and always read the ingredient list.
It’s important to us to share these precious essential oils with our customers in a way that’s eco-friendly, sustainable, and affordable! This is why we have the following precious essential oils available as dilutes. The essential oils or absolutes* are a 5% dilution in fractionated coconut oil. (Fractionated Coconut Oil does not go rancid, has no aroma, and is non-greasy.) As an added convenience, dilutes may be applied directly to the skin.
*Absolute oils, although derived from plant material, are a more concentrated substance extracted through a different method.

Don’t forget that diluting your essential oils with a carrier actually enhances their effectiveness. The carrier not only dilutes the concentration but also minimizes evaporation while binding the molecules to your skin. This allows for coverage of a larger surface area and increases transdermal absorption.
Isn’t it nice to know that diluting is good for you, the environment, and your pocketbook? It’s a win-win-win!
