Bergamot vs Bergamot FCF — What does FCF mean?
By Caryn Gehlmann, Clinical Aromatherapist
Bergamot essential oil is a favorite for us here at essential 3. We use it in many of our custom blends, not only because of its uplifting citrusy fragrance that almost everyone loves but also because of its numerous therapeutic properties. However, it is a photosensitizing essential oil that can potentially damage your skin if misapplied so it’s important to learn how to use it safely. This brings us to our Q&A for the month, When would I choose Bergamot vs Bergamot FCF essential oil?
This question came to us from Margeret who noticed we carry both Bergamot or Bergamot, FCF, and wanted to know which one she should use. Watch this short video for my short answer or continue reading to learn more of the interesting science behind how these two essential oils work:
Why Caution is Needed When Using Bergamot Essential Oil Topically
Bergamot essential oil contains naturally occurring furocoumarins so it should not be used on the skin while in the sun because of its photosensitizing effects. Topical application should be avoided for 12-18 hours before exposure to the sun. For dilution guidelines for Bergamot and other photosensitizing essential oils, read the article Photosensitizing Essential Oils – Protect Your Skin.
Why Bergamot FCF Essential Oil Is Not Phototoxic
What is Bergamot FCF and why is it a safe alternative for topical use? Bergamot (FCF) Citrus bergamia has had the Bergaptene/Furanocoumarins removed so it’s safe to use topically. It’s all about the distillation process. Bergamot FCF is steam distilled instead of cold-pressed processing. The photosynthesizing compounds tend to be present in cold-pressed essential oils, but not in distilled oils.
Bergamot vs Bergamot FCF — How to Safely Choose Between Them
You might be thinking if Bergamot FCF is safer for your skin, why not always choose that option? Great question!
You want to choose Bergamot…
If you are blending for the aroma and its therapeutic benefits, Bergamot is usually the preferred option. It packs a more aromatic punch! This makes it a good choice to:
- Use it in an aromatherapy inhaler to elevate your mood. Bergamot essential oil is celebrated for its ability to uplift the spirits and promote relaxation. Its delightful citrus scent has been linked to reducing stress and anxiety levels by stimulating the release of dopamine and serotonin – the body’s feel-good neurotransmitters.
- Diffuse the oil in your living space to create an environment less conducive to the spread of airborne pathogens. The immune-boosting properties of Bergamot essential oil can be attributed to its antimicrobial and antiviral characteristics.
At e3 we use Bergamot for the following two custom blends: Happy Heart Blend and Urinary Blend.
You want to choose Bergamot FCF…
If you appreciate its slightly softer aroma and want to apply it topically or blend it with leave-on products. It is a fantastic option to:
- Use it in your skincare. Bergamot essential oil is renowned for its skin-rejuvenating properties. Its antiseptic and antibacterial qualities make it an excellent addition to skincare routines. When diluted with a carrier oil, Bergamot FCF can help combat acne, reduce inflammation, and promote a clearer complexion.
- Use it as a soothing digestive aid. When diluted and applied topically to the abdominal area or inhaled, Bergamot FCF essential oil helps soothe indigestion, bloating, and other digestive discomforts. Its calming effect extends to the digestive system, promoting a healthy and balanced gut.
- Blend it with massage lotion or a carrier oil for muscle relaxation. The analgesic properties of Bergamot make it a potential ally in managing pain. Whether used in massage oils or added to a warm compress, the oil’s soothing nature can help alleviate muscle tension and discomfort.
