Winter Essential Oil Recipes — DIY Holiday Gifts
By Caryn Gehlmann, Clinical Aromatherapist
During wintertime, our homes and skin can use some extra TLC. It’s too cold to open up the house and let the breeze blow through, plus it’s so drying on our skin. I love how aromatherapy can help both situations! Aromatherapy freshens and clears the air. And dry skin soaks up the moisturizing goodness in essential oils.
The DIY recipes I’m sharing today smell so good, they get me in the holiday mood, plus they make great holiday gifts, too!
DIY Winter Essential Oil Recipes for Skin
Because we need extra moisturizing during the winter, we can use body butter to saturate dry skin.
This easy-to-make creamy whipped body butter is very festive — even the guys love this one!
- ½ cup shea butter
- ½ cup unrefined virgin coconut oil
- ¼ cup cocoa butter
- 20 drops Skin Care Blend
- 15 drops Bergamot FCF*
- 5 drops Clove
- Double boiler or bowl over boiling water.
- Stand mixer or immersion blender
- Storage container
In a double boiler, use medium heat to liquefy the shea butter, coconut oil, and cocoa butter, stir occasionally. Turn off the heat, and stir in the essential oils. Immediately place the mixture into the fridge to set for one hour. Remove from the fridge, and whip using a stand mixer or immersion blender until smooth and creamy. Store in a cool place for up to six months.
*Avoid other citrus oils on the face due to photosensitizing.
A relaxing bath is a beautiful reminder to make time for self-care during the hustle and bustle of the season.
- 15 drops Frankincense & Myrrh Blend
- 5 drops Dark Cardamom
- 5 drops Ginger
- 4 oz Pink Himalayan Salt
- 2 Tb golden jojoba oil
Mix ingredients, sniff. If you say, “that smells good”, add more oils. If you say, “that smells strong”, you have the correct proportion because it’s diluted in the bath. Use 1 oz per bath. Makes enough for 4 baths.
- 240 ml Castille Soap
- 15 drops Forest Blend
- 15 drops Orange Sweet
- 10 drops Peppermint
- One 250 ml Foamer Bottle
Pour castile soap into the bottle. Add oils. Use 30-40 drops. Gently shake to combine. Enjoy!
