Q&A with Caryn, Emotional Balance
How Comforting Scents Can Connect Us Emotionally
By Caryn Gehlmann, Clinical Aromatherapist
As the years go by, something keeps standing out to us: connection. Seriously, every email you send and every story you share means the world to us. Hearing about your experiences reminds us exactly why we love aromatherapy so much. And why we’re excited to share comforting scents that can create little moments to pause for a calming emotional reset in our busy lives.
All these conversations we have with you? They’re what keep us going. They remind us why we’re so committed to sharing solid information about using essential oils safely, and why we always want to encourage you to choose what feels right for you and what you need right now.
The Brain, the Breath, and Why Comforting Scents Matter
Scent has a direct pathway to the limbic system, the part of the brain responsible for emotion, memory, and instinctive responses. When we inhale an aroma, the limbic system interprets its emotional significance almost instantly. This is why certain scents can evoke a sense of ease and safety, while others may place us on alert. Research continues to explore this powerful relationship between smell, emotion, and behavior, showing that specific aromas can help reduce stress and positively influence mood.
So which oils have comforting scents? The answer is personal. There is no single essential oil or blend that works for everyone. Each of us responds differently, which is why listening to your body is key. The right aroma often reveals itself through a simple, embodied response, a softening, a deep breath, a quiet “ahhhh.” That feeling is your cue. Finding the right scent may take a little time, but the process itself can be deeply rewarding, and the sense of comfort it brings is well worth the journey.
