Blue Tansy is Good for Skin & So Much More
By Caryn Gehlmann, Clinical Aromatherapist
Blue Tansy essential oil is a skincare marvel! It’s also known for its gentle, soft floral, comforting aroma and even more therapeutic benefits. And it’s blue — which makes it a fun oil to blend if you’re looking for something unique! However, as with many increasingly popular essential oils, sustainability is an issue. So let’s explore what Blue Tansy is good for and how we can enjoy it in a sustainable way to ensure the longevity of this lovely plant species.
What is Blue Tansy Good For?
There are many reasons why Blue Tansy has been rapidly gaining popularity. It has unique therapeutic properties and many benefits to your health and well-being. Here are a few of the benefits you can enjoy:
SKIN CARE MARVEL: With its skin-nourishing qualities, Blue Tansy is known for its ability to calm irritated skin, reduce redness, and promote a clear complexion. It’s a popular choice when you’re dealing with skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. As a reminder, you want to make sure to dilute it (or purchase it prediluted) before applying topically.
ANTI-INFLAMMATORY POWERHOUSE: Blue Tansy contains a compound called chamazulene, renowned for its potent anti-inflammatory properties. This makes it a valuable ally in reducing inflammation and easing discomfort associated with conditions like arthritis and muscle aches.
RELAXATION & STRESS RELIEF: Many find the sweet and floral aroma of Blue Tansy relaxing. That’s no surprise since it possesses calming and relaxing properties. Diffusing this oil in a diffuser or personal aromatherapy inhaler can help alleviate stress and anxiety.
RESPIRATORY & ALLERGY RELIEF: The anti-inflammatory and decongestant properties of Blue Tansy make it helpful when you’re dealing with respiratory issues. It also has anti-allergenic properties if you’re prone to nasal irritation due to allergies. Inhaling the vapors or using the oil in a steam inhalation can help clear nasal passages and support respiratory function.
Blue Tansy’s Journey from the Hillsides of Morocco
When it comes to sustainability, I find it helpful to know the origin as well as the harvesting and distillation process of Blue Tansy essential oil. This will give you a deeper understanding of the journey it takes to reach your hands.
ORIGIN: Blue Tansy, in Latin Tanacetum annuum, is also known as Moroccan Tansy. It’s native to Morocco, where the plant thrives in the sun-soaked, rocky landscapes. The journey of Blue Tansy essential oil begins with the careful harvest of its tiny, daisy-like flowers.
HARVESTING: Harvesting is typically done in the early morning when the concentration of essential oils in the flowers is at its peak.
DISTILLATION: Once harvested, the blue flowers undergo steam distillation to extract the precious essential oil. The distinctive azure color of Blue Tansy essential oil is attributed to its high chamazulene content. Chamazulene is a powerful anti-inflammatory compound that contributes not only to the oil’s color but also to its therapeutic properties.
How to Use This Precious Oil Sustainably
Remember, thousands of its little flowers need to be harvested to bring you this beautiful blue oil. Using Blue Tansy essential oil sustainably is crucial to ensure the longevity of the plant species. Here are easy ways you can enjoy the sustainable use of Blue Tansy essential oil:
PRACTICE DILUTION: Blue Tansy essential oil is potent, and a little goes a long way. By diluting the oil with a carrier oil before applying it to the skin, you not only ensure its safe use but also extend the life of the essential oil. This reduces the overall demand for the plant material.
At e3, it’s important to share these precious essential oils with our customers in a way that’s eco-friendly, sustainable, and affordable! This is why we offer Blue Tansy, as well as other precious oils, as a dilute. It’s a 5% dilution in Fractionated Coconut Oil, which does not go rancid, has no aroma, and is non-greasy. As an added convenience, dilutes may be applied directly to the skin.
BLEND WITH OTHER ESSENTIAL OILS: Beyond its standalone charm, Blue Tansy can be blended into various blends to elevate your wellness and self-care routine. This is another way to benefit from this amazing oil in a more sustainable way. See our Blue Tansy product page for a list of essential oils that combine well with it.
Here’s a sample recipe of how to use Blue Tansy for skin irritation:
Skin-Soothing Blue Tansy Roller Blend
8 drops Blue Tansy
5 drops Lavender
5 drops Roman Chamomile
Jojoba or Sweet Almond Oil (carrier oil)
Combine the essential oils in the roll-on bottle and top it off with a carrier oil. Apply this soothing blend to areas of skin irritation for a calming and nourishing effect.
If you are looking to use Blue Tansy to calm, relax, and settle your mind and body try diffusing or inhaling e3’s Courageous blend. In addition to Blue Tansy, it has Black Spruce, Frankincense, and Rosewood to promote clarity and fortitude.
CONSIDER ALTERNATIVES: It’s always a good idea to be open to various options. Sometimes aggressive marketing of one particular essential oil, makes us forget that there are alternative essential oils that offer similar therapeutic properties. If sustainability is important to you, this practice reduces the demand for a specific plant and allows for more sustainable harvesting practices.
Nature generously provides us with a diverse array of essential oils, each with its unique characteristics and benefits. Here are some examples of essential oils that share similar qualities to Blue Tansy, but there are many more:
Lavender Essential Oil: Lavender is a staple in the world of essential oils for its versatility and its calming and balancing effects. It shares Blue Tansy’s ability to promote relaxation and you can use it in your diffuser, skincare routine, and to help you sleep.
German Chamomile Essential Oil: Like Blue Tansy, German Chamomile contains chamazulene, contributing to its deep blue color. This oil is also valued for its anti-inflammatory properties and is often used for skincare, especially for sensitive or irritated skin.
Helichrysum Essential Oil: Helichrysum is cherished for its skin-healing properties. It can be a suitable alternative for addressing skin concerns and supporting overall skin health. Additionally, its sweet and earthy aroma adds a unique touch to blends.
Educate Yourself to Make Safe, Sustainable Choices
At e3, we are known for promoting education on the safe, sustainable, and beneficial use of all essential oils. You have to use caution when shopping for essential oils. Avoid the trap of finding the cheapest versions of more costly precious essential oils to purchase. Often, suppliers will call something “Blue Tansy” or “Neroli” but it’s either a different plant species or has synthetic fillers. Read about the origin of the essential oil, look for the Latin name to confirm it’s the plant you’re looking for, and always review the ingredient list.
