Body Oil Recipes That Soften, Relax and Uplift
By Caryn Gehlmann, Clinical Aromatherapist
Body oils have been used for centuries to nourish the skin, relax the body, and create moments of quiet self-care. When essential oils are thoughtfully blended into a carrier oil, a simple moisturizing step becomes something deeper—a sensory ritual that supports both the body and the mind.
Well-formulated body oil recipes do more than soften skin. Carrier oils help replenish the skin barrier and lock in hydration, while the aroma of essential oils engages the limbic system — the part of the brain connected to mood, memory, and emotion.
When you massage body oil into your arms, shoulders, or legs, you’re supporting circulation, nourishing the skin, and allowing aromatic molecules to gently influence how you feel. With the right blend, body oil can help you unwind after a long day, create a calming evening ritual, or bring a moment of brightness and presence to your morning.
One of the greatest benefits of using essential oils in body oils is how customizable they are. Some essential oils feel deeply calming, like Lavender or Roman Chamomile. Others offer grounding and emotional depth, like Vetiver. Floral oils such as Jasmine bring a sense of warmth and emotional comfort. Citrus oils like Bergamot add brightness and lift. Blending oils allows you to create a body oil that matches how you want to feel. You can also simplify the process by starting with one of e3’s thoughtfully crafted blends such as Spring Awakens, Be Calm, or Curiosity, and adding it to your favorite carrier oil.
Safety Tips for Using Essential Oils in Body Oil Recipes
Before blending, it’s important to remember that essential oils are highly concentrated. They should always be diluted in a carrier oil before applying to the skin. Good carrier oils include:
- Sweet Almond Oil (lightweight, rich in vitamin E, and ideal for massage or daily moisturizing),
- Jojoba Oil (closely resembles the skin’s natural sebum and absorbs beautifully), or
- Fractionated Coconut Oil (clear, odorless, very stable with a light feel on the skin).
These carrier oils allow essential oils to disperse evenly across the skin while helping maintain a healthy moisture barrier.
Because essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts, they should always be diluted before applying to the skin.(Find e3’s dilution guide here.)
For most adults, a 1–2% dilution works well for daily body oils. That equals approximately:
- 6 drops of essential oil per ounce (30 ml) of carrier oil for a 1% blend
- 12 drops per ounce for a 2% blend
If you have sensitive skin or are trying a new essential oil, start on the lower end and perform a small patch test on the inside of the elbow.
If using citrus oils like Bergamot, be mindful of photosensitivity. Traditional Bergamot essential oil can increase sensitivity to sunlight, when applied to skin that will be exposed to UV light. Choosing Bergamot FCF (furanocoumarin-free) removes the compounds responsible for this effect and is a great option for daytime body oils.
Do Body Oils Stain Clothes and Sheets?
Many people wonder whether body oils will stain clothing or bedding. Carrier oils such as Jojoba Oil and Fractionated Coconut Oil are the least likely to stain because they absorb quickly and leave very little residue. Staining is more likely when too much oil is applied or when clothing is put on immediately after application.
A helpful approach is to apply body oil to slightly damp skin after a shower and allow a few minutes for absorption. Many people also enjoy applying body oils in the evening while relaxing at home.
Using a small amount and massaging it thoroughly into the skin allows the skin to absorb the oil more easily. Slipping into a robe or comfortable loungewear afterward adds to the cozy ritual and allows any excess oil to absorb fully. (If oil does transfer onto fabric, rubbing a small amount of Dawn dish detergent into the spot before laundering can help release the oil.)
How to Store Essential Oil / Body Oil Recipes
Storage plays an important role in maintaining the freshness of body oil blends.
To protect the delicate aromatic compounds in essential oils:
• Store blends in dark glass bottles
• Keep them in a cool, stable environment
• Avoid prolonged exposure to heat and light
Proper storage helps preserve both the aroma and the effectiveness of the blend.
Beyond the practical benefits for skin, body oils offer something many of us need more of… an invitation to pause.
Sometimes the smallest ritual — an inhale of lavender, the warmth of oil on the skin, a quiet moment before sleep — become the ones that support us the most.
Here are three beautiful body oil recipes that combine calming florals, grounding notes, and gentle brightness. Warming a small amount of oil in your hands, inhaling the aroma, and slowly massaging it into your skin can shift the pace of the moment. Your breath slows, muscles soften, and your nervous system receives the gentle message that it’s safe to relax.

Bright & Balanced Body Oil
