Mandarin Essential Oils: This Gentle, Comforting Citrus Comes In Three Profiles
By Caryn Gehlmann, Clinical Aromatherapist
When someone asks me about Mandarin, they’re often surprised by my first response. “Which Mandarin?” Most people don’t realize there isn’t just one Mandarin essential oil. In fact, there are three mandarin essential oils!
All of the Mandarin essential oils come from the same tree, Citrus reticulata. The difference is the stage of ripeness when the fruit is harvested.
Think of it as watching the same fruit mature through the seasons. As the peel develops from green to yellow to deep orange-red, its aromatic profile changes, too. Those changes are subtle rather than dramatic, but they’re enough that an aromatherapist may choose one over another depending on the mood they want to create.
Before we explore the three Mandarins, let’s answer another common question.
If I already have Orange Sweet, do I need Mandarin?
Because they’re both citrus oils, Mandarin Red and Orange Sweet are often thought of as interchangeable. While they certainly share a bright, cheerful character, they create different experiences.
Orange Sweet feels sunny, vibrant, and energizing. It’s the citrus oil I often reach for when I want to brighten a room, refresh my outlook, or add a little extra optimism to the day.
Mandarin Red is softer, sweeter, and more comforting. Instead of encouraging you to jump into the next task, it invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and enjoy the moment you’re in.
Orange Sweet feels like sunshine; Mandarin Red feels like the warm glow of sunset. Neither is better. They simply meet different needs.
3 Mandarin Essential Oils: Green, Yellow & Red
One of the things I love about aromatherapy is that nature is always teaching us something. Harvesting Mandarin at different stages of ripeness is a perfect example.
Mandarin Green is harvested while the fruit is still immature.
Mandarin Green is one of our non standard oils that you can request. Its aroma is crisp, bright, and lightly green, with less sweetness than the fully ripened fruit. I often think of Mandarin Green as the oil of fresh beginnings. It’s an excellent choice when you want to feel clear and renewed rather than stimulated.
Many people enjoy diffusing Mandarin Green during morning routines, while working in a home office, or whenever they’re beginning a creative project. It also blends well with Rosemary, Basil, and Petitgrain for fresh daytime diffuser blends.
Mandarin Yellow is harvested as the fruit begins to ripen.
Mandarin Yellow is another non standard oil that you can request. It’s probably the least familiar of the three because it isn’t as widely available. Its aroma sits comfortably between Green and Red Mandarin. It isn’t quite as crisp as Green, yet it hasn’t developed the rich sweetness of Red.
I think of Mandarin Yellow as the everyday Mandarin. Its beautifully balanced aroma makes it easy to blend with floral, woodsy, and herbal oils like Lavender, Frankincense, and Coriander.
Mandarin Red is harvested when the fruit is fully ripe.
Mandarin Red
has an aroma that is warm, juicy, sweet, and wonderfully comforting. This is the Mandarin I most often reach for during quiet evenings when I want my home to feel peaceful and welcoming.
Its gentle sweetness blends well with Lavender, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Sandalwood, Ho Wood, and Chamomile Roman. Together they create diffuser blends that feel soft, grounding, and deeply relaxing.
Which Mandarin Do You Choose?
Instead of asking which Mandarin is best, consider how you’d like your space to feel.
- If you’re looking for freshness and a sense of renewal, Mandarin Green is a wonderful choice.
- If you’d like a balanced citrus that easily complements many other essential oils, Mandarin Yellow is beautifully versatile.
- If comfort, quiet, and relaxation are what you’re seeking, Mandarin Red is likely the one you’ll reach for most often.
Each one has its own place, and together they remind us that even the same fruit has different gifts to offer as it matures.
Simple Ways to Enjoy Mandarin Every Day
Mandarin is one of our favorites because it plays well with many other oils, plus its uses seem to be endless.
Diffuse it while reading, journaling, or enjoying a warm bath to help create a peaceful evening atmosphere. Add it to your living room before guests arrive, or in the kitchen after cooking, to create a naturally fresh and welcoming space. A few drops in your diffuser while folding laundry, working from home, or savoring your morning coffee can transform an ordinary routine into a small moment of mindfulness.
Mandarin adds warmth and sweetness without overpowering other aromas. Whether you combine it with Lavender for peaceful evenings, Cedarwood for grounding, Frankincense for reflection, or Peppermint for a bright, refreshing lift, Mandarin has a way of bringing harmony to almost any blend.
Use Mandarin Essential Oils Safely
As with all essential oils, always dilute Mandarin before applying it to the skin and avoid contact with your eyes and other sensitive areas.
Because Mandarin essential oils are cold-pressed from the peel of the fruit, they may increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. If used topically, avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds on the application area for at least 12 to 18 hours.
Store your bottle tightly closed and away from heat and sunlight. If you’re pregnant, nursing, have a medical condition, or plan to use essential oils with young children, consult an appropriate healthcare professional before use.
One Fruit, Three Mandarin Essential Oils
I think that’s one of the joys of learning about essential oils. Just when you think you know a plant, nature reveals another layer.
Whether you’re drawn to the fresh brightness of Mandarin Green, the gentle balance of Mandarin Yellow, or the comforting warmth of Mandarin Red, you’ll discover that each one brings its own quiet gift that makes an essential oil feel like it was made for exactly the moment you’re in.
If you’re interested in an essential oil, but it’s not listed on our website, please contact us and see if we carry it as one of our non standard oils.
