Today’s Patchouli Benefits Home, Body and Mind In Ways You Never Expected
By Caryn Gehlmann, Clinical Aromatherapist
On the days I wear a custom-blended aroma that includes Patchouli, I receive my best compliments. People notice something intriguing but can’t always pinpoint it. Patchouli is an essential oil that makes people lean in. It also makes people take sides. For some, it brings back memories of a bohemian lifestyle, incense-filled shops, or college dorm rooms. For others, it’s a warm, grounding scent that feels both luxurious and enduring. Because Patchouli benefits us in so many ways, I want to help replace old misconceptions with a fresh appreciation for this remarkable essential oil.
The truth is, much of the “hippie patchouli” many people remember was either a synthetic version or a darker, heavier distillation that gave the oil a very different scent profile. Today’s patchouli deserves a second look. Here’s why…
The Real Scoop on Patchouli
Patchouli’s character changes dramatically depending on how it is distilled. In the past, iron stills were commonly used. This produced a dark, strong oil that many people found overpowering. Stainless steel distillation creates a lighter, more refined aroma that allows the subtleties of Patchouli to shine through. Stainless steel distilled patchouli has a smoother scent throw, making it ideal for blending with floral, citrusy, or woodsy essential oils.
Patchouli is also a base note, which means it holds an aroma in place. Base notes slow the evaporation of lighter oils, allowing the full blend to linger and develop over time. This is one reason patchouli is prized and why it has such staying power in personal blends.
Surprising Ways Patchouli Benefits Us
Keep Ants (and other pests) Away Naturally
Ants rely on scent trails to navigate. Patchouli disrupts those trails, causing confusion and discouraging them from returning. Mosquitoes and other insects that depend on their olfactory senses are confused by it, too!
Indoor Spray: Mix 30 drops of Patchouli with ¼ cup water and ¼ cup vodka. Shake and spray along entry points. I found this spray recipe on House Digest.
Cotton Ball Defense: Place 5 to 8 drops of Patchouli on cotton balls and tuck them near windows, doorways, and behind appliances. Refresh every few days.
Outdoor garden spray: When added to outdoor sprays with water and mild soap, Patchouli may help deter aphids and fleas.
3 Ways to Use Patchouli for Meditation and Yoga
1. Place a drop on your mat or meditation cushion or diffuse it before a session to create a steady scent anchor for mindfulness and grounding.
2. Combine Patchouli with Lavender and Sweet Orange in a roller blend. Its earthy richness can help create a calm, focused atmosphere. (Video: How to Use Essential Oils for Meditation and Yoga.)
3. Diffuse Patchouli for Breathwork
4 drops Patchouli
3 drops Frankincense
2 drops Cedarwood Atlas
1 drop Clary Sage
Add to your diffuser with its recommended amount of water. Turn on a few minutes before your breathwork practice to set the atmosphere.
Cozy Linen and Room Freshener
Patchouli’s fixative properties help the scent to last on sheets, towels, clothing, or curtains. (Test on fabric first to avoid staining.)
12 drops Patchouli
10 drops Bergamot
8 drops Geranium
2 oz distilled water
2 oz vodka or witch hazel
Combine in a 4 oz spray bottle. Shake the bottle before each use.
Even More Patchouli Benefits
Skin Soother and Scar Support
Patchouli can help balance oily skin, calm occasional breakouts, and support the appearance of newly acquired scars. Always dilute it in a carrier oil such as Jojoba or Rosehip and apply sparingly to affected areas.(When and How to Apply Essential Oils to Scars.)
Natural Deodorizer for Musty Spaces
A few drops on a cotton ball placed inside closets, storage bins, or near bookshelves can refresh the air and add a soft, earthy aroma.
Potpourri Enhancer
Since Patchouli holds its scent longer than many oils, it is perfect for revitalizing dried flower blends and herbal sachets.
